Dried capsicum flakes

Dried red capsicum (bell pepper) is very lightweight in your hiking pack, but adds a beautiful sweetness to soups, stews and sauces. This natural product is just made by dehydrating and then crushing red capsicum into flakes.

Description

Dried capsicum looks similar to dried chilli, but while dried chilli is incredibly spicy, dried capsicum has a mild flavour. It is made from large red capsicum (bell pepper).

Where to buy

  • You should be able to find dried red capsicum granules or flakes online.
  • Make sure you don’t buy dried red chilli by mistake!
  • If you have a dehydrator, you could also consider drying your own bell peppers and crushing them into flakes.

Using this ingredient in camping meals

  • You can use dried capsicum (bell pepper) in any recipe that calls for fresh raw capsicum. One small fresh capsicum is the equivalent of 1/3 cup of dried capsicum flakes.
  • To rehydrate, mix 2.5 parts water with one part dried capsicum granules. Leave it to stand until soft, about 20 minutes.
  • If you are using the dried capsicum in a sauce, you can add the capsicum flakes with some water while the sauce is cooking. Again, allow 20 minutes for the bell pepper flakes to soften in the sauce.
