Mesh bag
A fine mesh bag can be a very handy tool for hikers and camp cooks. Think of it as a lightweight colander.
The mesh bag weighs virtually nothing, and is very useful for rinsing grains and soaking dehydrated ingredients like dried mushrooms. You often need to keep the soaking liquid for stocks and soups, and the mesh bag makes it easy to remove and squeeze out the ingredients without getting rid of the liquid.

Where to buy
We buy our mesh bags on the internet – search for “mesh bag for straining” or something similar.
Substitutes
- We prefer nylon mesh bags. They are lightweight and dry quickly, making them perfect for your backpack.
- However, you can also find cotton bags.
Using this ingredient in camping meals
- If you need to soak something, use the mesh bag like a giant teabag. Put your dry ingredients in the bag, then lower it into hot water. Leave to soak.
- After your ingredients have finished soaking, you may need to squeeze the soaking liquid out of the bag to extract as much flavour as possible. Make sure you don’t scald your hands when doing this.
- We’ve had no problems using them with boiling water, though they should not be used with hot oil.
